(CNN) -- Baseball writers balked at naming any new players to the sport's Hall of Fame on Wednesday, with none of the 37 eligible players drawing enough votes for a ticket to Cooperstown.

The 2013 ballot marked the first year of eligibility for several players who have been named in the probes of performance-enhancing drug use in the major leagues, including all-time home-run champ Barry Bonds and seven-time Cy Young winner Roger Clemens.

It's only the eighth time that no player received the 75% support needed to enter the National Baseball Hall of Fame, and several of the voters said the results reflected the Baseball Writers Association of America's ambivalence about the sport's "steroid era."

"This is really a statement on an era, and it's really a sad day for baseball," BBWAA voter Jon Heyman told the sport's in-house MLB Network. Heyman said he expected the writers who choose hall members would "basically split" on Bonds and Clemens, "and we're not split. It was two-thirds to one-third against."

The concerns about players who were linked to steroids "has hurt some of the clean guys" as well, Heyman said.

Clemens came in at 37.6 percent

Bonds at 36.2 percent

With just one more year on the ballot, Jack Morris will put that “50 percent rule” to perhaps its greatest test. His support barely budged as he came in at 67.7 percent, just 1 percent better than a year ago.

McGwire 's numbers keep dwindling over the past 3 years. starting at 23% and as of this yr, down to 16%

Sosa with 12.5%

It appears Rafael Palmeiro will become the first player to collect 3,000 hits and hit 500 homers to be left out. After his votes fell to 8.8 percent from 12.6 percent, he will be fortunate to receive the 5 percent he needs in 2014 to remain on the ballot.

Is 3k hits really that big a deal in the era he played in? It seems that as time goes on and players careers are longer that 3k number just isnt as big a deal as it once was when players would take time off to go to war or only played for 5-7 years.

I dunno, I dont think 3k is all that impressive anymore coming from the "roid era" (I really hate that term but it is what it is).

so stupid. I love baseball but I hate what is tied along with it. Gaylord Perry is a HoF even though he doctored baseballs, Ty Cobb gets in even though he was a racist bigot who beat up a guy in a wheel chair, the list goes on.

BUT OH NO, YOU TAKE ANY DRUGS, YOU AREN"T GOOD AT ALL
