Taylor Mays
not really sure why the 9ers are so eager to trade/cut this guy but DAMMM!!! hes a big strong fast ass Safety with only 1 season under his belt...i remeber when he was coming out of USC i wanted the Jets to snag him but i knew it was just a pipe dream, well now after the 9ers sent a league wide email asking for bidders on him i really hope the jets pull the trigger and somehow get him in camp, im guessing it might take a 3rd rnder....i know his Safety skills are pretty weak but hes 6'3 230lbs and fast as a lightning bolt, i can see him playing some sort of hybrid LB in the Jets system where all he would be asked to do is rush the passer while all the big bodies up front take care of the lineman, if you think Clay Mathews is fast coming off the edge, Mays is even faster and he can lay the wood pretty good too...

Re: Taylor Mays
Wasnt Mays supposed to be SFs future safety or something? What happened? I know he needed work, but give him time. It takes time to develop a player.

Re: Taylor Mays
only thing mays is good for is run support.
in coverage you might as well put a dummy there.
and playing in coverage is not something you can just learn.
you need to have a feel for it.

Exactly... Mays just doesnt have the brains for being a coverage Safety. Sure he can hit hard but thats about all he can do.

Re: Taylor Mays
I don't understand why we just can't develop him. Who knows, maybe this is all just to piss him off. Give this guy 3 years to see who he really is. I mean hell, we gave Alex Smith how many years?

Re: Taylor Mays
Thats what i was saying , i wouldnt want Mays as our Safety, but he could take over either OLB spots and just flat out speed rush the QB while the Hogs up front contain the LOS.....i know its a little far fetched but i envision Mays as the protoypical Pass Rushing OLB, kinda like Lawrence Taylor but a little smaller and faster

His problem is reading, his 4.2 speed is useless when you don't read and react (which is why the 40 is overrated). I wouldn't mind trying him out at OLB though. I still can't believe we let Manny Lawson go only to keep Parys Haralson. I would train him this year for OLB and see what he does next year.

Re: Taylor Mays
Its not THAT bad that he can't cover. Brian Dawkins wasn't the best cover safety ever so we pretty much used him as a hybrid linebacker his whole career and he was effective in that role. During his prime he had always been a top 2 free safety

Adrian Wilson isn't a great coverage safety either but he's exactly the sort of guy you'd want in a run stopping D.
Some safeties do coverage better than others. Some are better at coverage than they are in run support. Doesn't necessarily mean they're bad.

dawkins knew how to seperate a wr or te from the ball when they where trying to catch it.
his timing on when to make the tackle and how to hit is what made him some what good in coverage.
he did not have very good ball skills but he made them think twice before they would come into his zone to try to catch the ball.
mays on the other hand can hit very hard but has no idea when and how to tackle lol.
a guy with his size speed and power should have caused more fumbles or incomplete passes.
right now he aint nothing more then gholston.
a workout warrior with the physical tools many people dream off but the lack of knowledge on how to play coverage and the lack of technique to translate his physical tools to the game of Football.
like i said before in college you play against people from all talents but in the NFL you play against the very best college had to offer.
in the NFL corners hit just as hard as lbers in college lol

Re: Taylor Mays
Even D landry wasnt great in coverage. But he led the team in tackles and was good with run stopping. I think if he gets put on a team in need of a safety that just stops the run it would work. But with the NFL turning into a passing league, he better learn how to cover or something or hes going to end up as backup foder.

Re: Taylor Mays
Mays has soo much talent its sickening, with that being said i hope he gets utilized the right way in Cinncy...they should really use him close to the line in Run support and an occasional blitz because his Coverage skills need a ton of help.

youll need the best defense ever because youll have the worst offense ever.
this years bengals make me think of the old coach mckay quote during the winless season in 76.
reporter: what do you think about the offenses execution
Coach: im all for it

Child please, Flacco will be on his ass all day with our amazing DE's! BLITZ BLITZ BLITZ! McKinnie gonna gain 50 lbs because of the depression he'll suffer after he gets beaten on every down and sees Flacco dead from taking too many hits

Re: Taylor Mays
Stupid move by the Niners. We are willing to give Alex Smith 7 long ass season but not give Taylor 2? I wish we would've kept him around to have him catch on and finally use that speed and power. Enjoy Cinn, I hope he does well.
