What I don't get about this past draft.
If the belief was that this years QB class was weak, why did everyone go crazy to grab them off the board so high? I look at Kapernick and I see us not picking one of the great QB's in next years draft with the hope that Colin grows in the system. Why not grab the best talent for another need?

To be fair, everyone involved with the NFL has lost their goddamn mind over the last year

Well the only people I really heard say this class was weak was maybe an analyst or two but was generally the public who was critisizing them.
Sure a few teams may not have liked them but they probably weren't in need of a QB(I'm not 100% sure on this one but I believed teams never actually came out and revealed themselves when critisizing one of these QBs.)

Everybody and I mean EVERBODY had us drafting Blaine Gabbert in the first round.
And they still persisted with their "prediction" even though Whisenhunt publicy said he didn't like Gabbert, he didn't fit into his system.

I think alot of people would agree with me when I say that once a team grabs a QB, its a mad rush aftewards from teams to want to make sure they grab their QB they want, before someone else does. You figure a QB is one of, if not THE most important position on a team. If you dont have a good QB, you wont make it to the SB, unless you have the Ravens 2000 defense or your whole team steps up. I almost think of the draft as a domino effect, once a player is taken, it all goes from there.

The reason behind it is the uncertainty surrounding free agency and trade ability this offseason. Teams that needed QBs may have feared there would be too little time to make a deal with a veteran, and their only other option was to draft a QB. If the guy they wanted was available, they took him higher than his value to ensure that nobody else would grab the same guy.Nef77 wrote:If the belief was that this years QB class was weak, why did everyone go crazy to grab them off the board so high? Yea but that's the thing. There are no good QB's in this draft. Throw this class with next years class and they barley make it in to the 2nd round. Why not grab a guy that can contribute like a Greg Little or Prince Amukamara rather than hope someone develops in 3 seasons?

well in this case I guess you could go with what brownsfan said. Maybe some of those teams were unsure if they would even get one of the free agent QBs when the lockout is over, and they figured they would rather have some type of insurance (if you want to call a rookie QB a "insurance"). We still dont know how the FA will come about, will it be under last years rules (in that case what QBs will actually be available to sign?), or will there be a whole new set of rules? So bottom line for me, I would say it was just because of the uncertainty of the coming FA. I think if the FA was before the draft, some of those QBs wouldnt have been taken until the 2nd or 3rd round.

Re: What I don't get about this past draft.
I think that through rule changes and style trends, the role of QB is becoming more and more of a determining factor in the NFL. If you don't have a dominant QB these days, you probably won't be doing too well. If you don't have a capable back up QB to hold things over while your starter recovers, you are also screwed. With such a premium on QB's, teams will do anything to make sure that they don't pass on the next Tom Brady.

Re: What I don't get about this past draft.
the only QB needy team that was critical of this years QB class was the Seahawks. Pete Carroll and John Schnieder were adamant that they think Whitehurst is more prepared than any of the QBs in this class and thats why the Hawks didnt go QB in this years draft and I dont blame them. i dont care for any of the QBs in this draft. Had Luck came out it'd be a whole different story entirely.
in my opinion the class is deep but not talented like in previous drafts. I think it'll be similar to the 2002 QB draft class in terms of talent.
