question about relief pitchers Empty question about relief pitchers

Is relief pitching a specialty or is it a team's 'best pitchers that aren't good enough to start' kind of thing?

It's not that they're "worse" persay, but they don't have the endurance. A lot of relief pitchers can be just as good as starters but simply can't maintin their level of play past 1 or 2 innings. And if they can show good endurance than they are often converted into starters. But no, to answer your question they are not necessarily worse, in fact a lot of teams best relievers (like the pirates) are probably better than their starters but simply can' t pitch as long without getting exhausted and breaking down.

Last year they were and I think long term too, they've played well but I don't think it will last and it's gonna revert soon to the way it was last year (IE bullpen more reliable than *most* of the starters)

well you have 5 starters which should be your best pitchers that can throw a ton of pitches

you have 1 closer who is a flame thrower or someone who is just controls the zone

set up guy is a closer like guy who can step in as closer but usually has different pitches/motion/style that the closer

the long relief which teams have 1 to 3 long relief, are the guys that are starter type pitchers, can throw a ton of pitches, but are forced to the pen because of excess of talent or inexperience. usually come in when the starter is forced out early or when a starter is hurt and need extra starters to replace them

middle relief guys who step in for 1-3 innings. these are normally the blow out guys. when you need a guy to come in when games get out of hand or match ups (left v left)
