Well thats how it is for most of us in the States. No one really gives a shit or knows whats going on, just supporting our country.

With the group play the top two teams from each group advance to the 16 team tourney.

So if us and Germany tie, we both advance. Or of course if we win.

We can lose to Germany and as long as:
1. Portugal and Ghana draw.
2. Follow me here. Ghana beats Portugal by (a.) only one goal (b.) The US only loses by one goal and (C.) Ghana doesn't out score the US by two or more days
3. Portugal beats Ghana by less than 5 goals.

Here are the current group standings

Germany - 4
USA -4
Ghana - 1
Portugal - 1

yeah we have like a 76% chance to advance, we would basically have to get routed by the Germans to not advance. Which I don't see happening since Germany has practically already advanced (98% chance). I don't think they'll come out trying to murder us like they did Portugal.

Portugal scores in the 94th minute of a 90 minute ballgame. Pretty stupid if you ask me. Why don't they stop the clock when the ball goes out of bounds or when they score and the guy who scores runs from like one sideline to the other,ripping off his shirt and swandiving into a pylon with the whole team swarming on top of him. They probally wouldn't even stop the clock if you had a streaker running around on the field with Brazils finest chasing after him. Nope the clock will keep running. Maybe you'll have a jungle deer jump out with a huge ass rack or maybe a crazy monkey with a sharp tree branch,chase everybody around and then after that spear the ball and go running off towards the jungle with yet again Brazils finest chasing it this time with motorcycles. After killing the beast by using blowdarts they will patch the ball up,blow it up and ceremoniusly carry it back to the ref who is still standing his ground looking at his watch to see how much time has gone by so he can tack it on at the end of the game. I was under the impression that the added time is for whenever they aren't actually playing while the clock is still running. Like penalties, setting up crosses/free kicks and whenever players flop and start bitchin and go complain to the refs. For whatever reason they just don't stop the clock.

the stoppage time is to keep the flow of the game and for what you just said, delays. It's partly to punish one team for killing time by flopping but also like if you have the ball in an NFL game with 30 seconds left, those 30 seconds run out, and they add like 1 or 2 minutes to see of the drive finishes.
