Ryan Mallet...Andy Dalton?
I would rank them in order:
Locker: 8
Mallet: 7
Newton: 6
Gabbert: 4
Ponder: 4
Dalton: Negative one because he's on the Bengals.

Re: Rookie QB performances
I think I only saw Dalton play. But I'll go from what I heard on some of the others.
Cash Newton: 2, I heard he was a "chunk" play got that got inflated stats.
Locker: 7, I've heard nothing but good things
Dalton: 1, looked lost. Although, he did have Suh coming after him so it was kind of expected.

Re: Rookie QB performances
dont look now but Jets rookie QB Greg Mccelroy had a very impressive performance going 23/39 208 yards 1 TD 0 INTs....i know its only preseason but i sure as hell feel more comfortable already with him as our backup than i ever did with Kellen Clemens or Mark Brunnell....i doubt he unseats Sanchez but this kid really impressed me.

Mark Brunell is a good backup. He has been in the league for ever. Mcelroy looked good but he did technically throw an INT, it got called back, it was a dumb throw.
I like him, he is smart, but 3 problems. He doesnt have the best pocket movement, when he runs UP, he under throws deep passes
Those will all be fixed with coaching and years in the NFL but Depth chart should be Mark, Brunell, Mcelroy, (PS) Willy

Re: Rookie QB performances
cam newton to start next game. i want you to watch 2 things. his head and feet
1. head, progression. He doesnt make it past read 1
2. feet, watch how off balance or awkward he looks, for a 6 6 passer he looks like yao ming becoming a tap dancer

Re: Rookie QB performances
cam still had the same issues with week 1. sloppy footwork, sloppy fundamentals, sloppy throws some times. cam needs to sit a whole year to realize physical ability is not 100% of the game.
Clausen looked really good, the INT last week got blown way out of proportion. Until cam learns what it takes to be a QB dont start him again.
Gabbert looked uncomfortable and lost again. another guy who needs a year to sit, maybe more than 1 year. low comp %, bad decision making. he doesnt really have the mental part of the game down. physically looks good with his throws but he needs to relax, look like he is about to go into surgery with his body language
ponder got his ass pounded bad
locker didnt have the stats but looked steady and cozy

Re: Rookie QB performances
newton is currently 6/19, all signs are pointing to him starting week 1 of the regular season. i would like to know why ESPN is still saying he is playing amazing. "cam is far out performing what everyone expected him to do so far" um what?
Dalton isnt looking bad though, tyrod taylor is gonna be in the ravens, skins game soon enough and he has looked really good in the times he has played.

Re: Rookie QB performances
Newton has done better than everyone expected him. I'm pretty sure I'm the only one on either this site and/or EA who hasn't immediately labeled him a bust.
He's a rookie QB who hasn't turned the ball over yet. I understand it's only preseason so far, but still he hasn't given the ball away.
There's another QB who had terrible completion percentage who is poised to break out this year: Mark Sanchez.
You all gotta give Newton the same amount of time for evaluation as anyone else. We all think Josh Freeman is good, right? I read an article in SI (I think) about the similarities between the two. Both big athletic QBs who excelled in a SPREAD system in college.
I'm on the Cam Newton bandwagon, and I'll say it all day long.

Re: Rookie QB performances
I didn't see this posted.. but one of the NFL guys, maybe Schefter posted how of all the rookie QB's, through 2 weeks of preseason Greg McElroy of the Jets had the highest QB rating.
DISCLAIMER*******
I am NOT.. repeat NOT.. saying McElroy is the best of the rookie QB's. Just saying how it's hard to judge them because some go against the starters, some go against 2nd or 3rd stringers. But the fact McElroy has better numbers than some of the highly ranked guys speaks more about the lack of progress of the rookies thanks to the lockout. McElroy is a long-term backup, nothing special. But the "good" rookies face an uphill battle because of the lockout.. very tough year to be a rookie qb.

mark sanchez didnt throw 30 to 40% completion rate. newton is just completely sloppy. he needs a year to learn to not jump and throw, to not hold the ball with 1 hand and away, to not stare down guys, he is just completely a mess so far.
if the panthers dont want to ruin him, let him sit

Excellent post.. to label Newton a bust like so many have done is just silly. He's a rookie who hasn't even played a regular season game yet.
Will he be great this year? No. No doubt about it. He only had 1 year of real college competition and is very raw. And now he's on the worst team in the NFL. He needs at least 3 years before people start throwing around the B word. I think he has a ton of ability and just needs to harness it.
